I wanted to take this time to write about something that’s really important. Many people deal with mental health and don’t seek the proper help for it. In the African American community, it’s rare to see a counselor or therapist about mental health issues. We were told to pray about it or that nothing was wrong, and that’s a huge mistake. A lot of men and women contemplate suicide because their loved ones don’t believe they have issues or don’t want to listen. More than ever, you hear about 10 and 13 year old kids committing suicide. From bullying, poverty, and not wanting to bear the pains of life, our people are dying. It’s difficult to hear about someone taking their life because it’s usually the people others wouldn’t expect. In every news article, you hear how the person was full of live and a great person. People say they never seen the person sad or going through issues. We have to look deeper. We believe in God and the church, but God wants you to seek Godly counseling as well. Counselors, social workers, therapist are available to those who seek help. There are many resources, but we have to use them.

We also have to stop telling our people that nothing is wrong with them. You never know the pain someone is feeling. People hide behind smiles everyday, it still doesn’t change the pain that’s going on. I believe that Mental health awareness needs to be in every school. Suicide prevention needs to be in every school. More than one counselor needs to be in every school. It’s too many people being left behind because of lack of knowledge or resources in their area.

In the past, I’ve dealt with suicidal thoughts. I didn’t know who to turn too and I didn’t want anyone to judge me. I had thoughts that if i just disappeared, people would appreciate me more. If I wasn’t here, I wouldn’t have to deal with certain things. The only difference is I didn’t have a plan written on how I was going to take my life, just thoughts. I found someone to talk too, who listened and prayed with me. I researched counseling services for myself and set my first appointment. My thoughts could’ve caused a more serious action. Your thoughts will influence your actions and behaviors. I’m glad I took the approach that I did because I am able to share it with others.

Even celebrities are dealing with mental health issues and committing suicide. That shows you that no matter how much money you  have, it will never change what you are truly feeling. Money brings even more problems.  Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. When you love and serve God, he will provide everything you need. I’m a witness! I was the person that tested God because, I didn’t believe I could make it with out money. God showed himself true and provided everything I needed. I say all of this to make this point, take care of yourself and each other. Seek counseling, offer support, and don’t hide your pain behind material things. I hope you find the courage to reach out to someone or even get help for yourself. We need to help and save a life. Below I provided some websites to explore for counseling services. We need you!
